Introduction

There’s not much to entertain you up in the Yukon, so why not turn your hand to making some great craft beer? Winterlong Brewing Co. has been putting out tasty craft creations since 2014. Along with a handy little brewery, they’ve got a tasting room, so after you’ve trekked across the vast frozen wastelands, you can put yourself on a stool and get one of the 9 year-round beers on their slate. It may be a far away atoll, but their offerings run the gamut of craft popularity including IPAs, oak-aged tripel, saison, and pale ales. Get into the best of the northern outreaches. The Sweater Weather is an oatmeal stout, bringing a smooth and sweet beer that’s comforting and perfect for warming your boots next to a roaring fire. Serves well at 8°C and can cellar up to a year.

How it looks

Pours like a glass of midnight with light carbonation. No head other than a light ring of fine bubbles around the glass.

How it smells

Warm malt with a touch of sweetness, dusty baker’s chocolate, medium-roast coffee beans, and a silky cream aroma.

How it tastes

The body of this beer is lighter than the aroma and style would lead you to believe. But it means the beer is easy to drink and allows the flavours to light up your tastebuds without filling your palate. The flaky oat that is telling on the nose is less pronounced, letting the dark chocolate and coffee elements mix with a silky, smooth creaminess. This beer is like throwing some half and half into your mouth, but with more interesting results. Finishes up smooth and slow.

Recommended food pairing

Some light nibbles would pair up well - get the charcuterie out so you can throttle how much you throw down your neck.
