Introduction

Calgary craft brewer, Tailgunner Brewing Co., is born from the history of a Canadian serviceman who survived astonishing conditions in World War 2 and his spirit of perseverance and quiet fortitude. Tailgunner makes straightforward styles that are high in quality and taste, based on traditional brewing recipes touched with innovation. Their beer hall is a place to set down your weary bones and have a tall glass of cold beer pulled from the taps and set before you. This is a place of quiet comfort that has no need to intrude on your enjoyment of a good beer after whatever sojourn you've been on has finished, or if it's simply a short break before you continue. Whether you're stopping by for a pint, or getting a growler to take on the move, Tailgunner has you covered. The Bombshell is a German-style brown, or Altbier, smoother than many darker beers and with a more dynamic flavour. Serves well at 8°C and can cellar up to a year.

How it looks

Pours a deep burgundy colour with mostly obscured body and light carbonation. A thin head of tiny bubbles out of the can slowly dissipates.

How it smells

Malty and sweet on the nose, the expected notes of caramel and toasted bread, some stone fruit, but there’s a twist of earthy spice that floats around the aroma.

How it tastes

Flavour leans on the caramel and toffee malt from the nose, but the spice leans into the bread qualities giving it a slightly sour, multigrain bread flavour. The stone fruit and loamy hops come in and the whole taste gets interesting as it warms up. The earthy hops really set up the sweeter elements well and the whole experience is smooth and long-lasting. Excellent pint worth nursing.

Recommended food pairing

Good to pair up with rosemary chicken or smoked turkey breast.
