It started as a passion and took close to twenty years of brewing in a basement for Dan Rogers to get Griffin Claw on the map. Starting as the house brewer for Big Rock Chophouse in Birmingham, Michigan, Rogers made beer for loyal locals and quietly raised his profile. In 2010 Griffin Claw pulled in two medals at the World Beer Cup and recognition flowed in. Now their taproom is a place to visit for a half dozen year-round brews complemented by a dozen drops rotated across the calendar. Griffin Claw makes a point of touring the state to hit-up big events, some beer related and others just good people who deserve crisp beer in their hands. The EL Rojo is a red-style ale with roasted malt character that makes it slightly sweet and a touch heavier than the standard ale. Serves well at 8°C and can cellar for six months.
Pours a red/amber colour with a slightly murky body and medium carbonation. A thin head of fine bubbles rests on top.
The roasted malt is the biggest aroma on this beer, taking a big swing at your nostrils. A sweet, caramel and confectioner’s sugar aroma rides shotgun, with a low-level loam aroma in the background.
This beer rides the line between the expectations of an amber ale and a lighter classic ale. The red style is leaner in the body and doesn’t suffer from the oversweet you can get in some ambers. The caramel and roasted elements are balanced against a slightly bitter, earthy tone that keeps it from falling into either side of the fence too strongly. Smooth mouthfeel and it all ends like a sweet summer kiss.
Put this beer together with a roasted chicken and steamed veggies covered in bournaise.
