Introduction

Rogue Ales is the kind of brewing company that would kick down your door and walk in with a 24 pack on one shoulder and a stereo under the other arm. Brewing from their compound in Newport, Oregon, they keep coming up with weirdness that is either the most brilliant use of a brewing system or ideas that border on psychopathy. But if the reaction is any indication, they’re doing something right. This will be the fourth time in four years they’ve come up on the Craft Club and every time their beer has been worth the price of admission. It may not always be to taste, but it’s never boring. They make craft beer, they make liquor, they serve oysters. When you’re dealing with maniacs like this, just smile and sip. The Dead ‘N’ Dead is a Heller Bock style beer - German in origin and like the Bock style but often with more hops. Often bready malt in style. Serves well at 8°C and you can keep it in the cooler for up to a year.

How it looks

Pours an amber colour and a fairly clear body and low carbonation. A thick head of bubbles out of the can slowly dissipates to a thin cap on top.

How it smells

Quite boozy on the front of the aroma, it can be slightly distracting, but work past it and you’ll smell syrupy malt, confectioner’s sugar, dried plums, vanilla, and some peat.

How it tastes

The ‘Dead is aged in whiskey casks, so you’ll get a touch of liquor on the front of your palate, but it quickly gives way to a smooth, slightly sweet malt flavour, dried stone fruit, and vanilla. This beer invades your senses and takes over your olfactory functions on each mouthful. It’s rich, sweet, earthy, and warm. It’s all the things you’d expect from a whiskey sipped in front of a fire, but less intense.

Recommended food pairing

Just drink this for now - the food would be lost in the flavour.
