Introduction

In the late 1990s, the Rochester Mills Beer Co. came to life in the old Western Knitting Mill in Rochester, Michigan. The creators of RMBC wanted to preserve and retain the original ethos of American manufacturing - infusing their own business with the determination, tradition, and craftsmanship of their forefathers. But with a twist of attitude from a time that was on the doorstep of the 21st century. Rochester Mills has become one of the spots the community regards as emblematic of their town. Rochester Mills Brewing Co. produces over 1500 bbl of beer annually, and has a dozen beers on the permanent slate. All styles and tastes are served up in flights, pints, or pitchers. The Oktoberfest is a German-style Märzen - an early form of beer for Oktoberfest that was eventually replaced by a lighter lager. This style is maltier and sweeter, with hop character and a snappy finish. Serves well at 8°C and can cellar up to six months.

How it looks

Pours a deep, gold colour with a fairly clear body and light carbonation. A thin layer of golden-hued bubbly foam rests on top.

How it smells

Bready malt at the front of the aroma, along with a grassy hop profile, and some caramel notes too. Very warm, sweet, and inviting but a touch one dimensional.

How it tastes

Strong malt sweetness at the front of the flavour but it’s combined with the noble hops in a way that is delicious and tantalizing to the palate. The hops are hard to pick out as any one flavour, but that gives them a flowery/herbal quality that doesn’t push away the best elements of the malt. The whole flavour is a mix of sweet and earthy that balances out perfectly. The flavour fades away, leaving only a touch of sweetness and dryness in the mouth.
