Introduction

Port brewing began life as a homebrew facility in a garage putting out a house beer for a small pizza parlor in Solana Beach. But after more than a few patrons showed up for the beer rather than the ‘za, Tomme Arthur and Vince Marsaglia decided the beer needed a bigger venue. Moving into a recently vacated brewery, Port Brewing Company was formed. The original vision was a Belgian-style brewhouse focusing on classic European styles. That changed to an all around craft brewery serving up American west coast recipes with Cali’ flavour. Over 15,000 barrels come out of the Port facility each year and their reach has crossed a continent, and slowly crosses the pond. The world is starting to taste Port Brewing’s creations. Soft Top is an American-style Pale Ale that eases away from stronger tropical fruit and focuses on citrus and malt, along with a grain base. Serves well at 8°C and should be enjoyed promptly.

How it looks

Pours incredibly pale with a hint of straw colour, a clear body, and light carbonation. A frothy head of yellowish white foam from the can becomes a layer of big bubbles on top.

How it smells

A light smattering of muddled tropical fruit aromas, sharp zest of lemon, malty and biscuit sweetness, and the hops come across as a lovely perfume with herbal qualities.

How it tastes

Quite vinous at first, but once it warms on the palate the flavour opens up and delivers sweeter citrus notes, fresh grain, tropical fruits that are still fairly hard to pick out but you can get a sense of mango and pineapple floating around in it, and the hops evolve from the simple floral tones into a brighter flower with freshly cut herbs. There’s a slightly astringent character to the feel of it in the mouth and it all quickly fades off leaving just a sweet, citrusy aftertaste.

Recommended food pairing

Light and refreshing, stick to seafood or zesty green salads with this beer.
