Introduction

A relatively new player in the Alberta craft beer scene, Familia comes from the dry plains and lonely hills. The name Wetaskiwin means the “hills where peace was made.” A quiet part of the world where the pensive brewmaster can consider their tools and their taste without the clamber of the city and foottread of the thirsty will interrupt. It’s no small task to take on creating a new brewery in the middle of 2021, but the best support will always be a loving family that is prepared to work alongside you. The beer that Familia has put out is one that comes from slow, methodical work to create the best. The Humble Summer Golden Ale is a simple bird. Designed to be crisp and easy on the palate, with gentle floral qualities and warmth. Meant to be enjoyed but also very easy to enjoy over and over again. Serves well at 8°C and can stand to wait for you up to a year.

How it looks

Pours a light golden colour with a hazy body and light carbonation. A rambunctious head of foam out of the can that bubbles on top all the way.

How it smells

The main aroma is toasted malt, but it isn’t sweet or even the caramel you’d normally expect. It’s a drier toasted grain scent with the vague impression of flowers on top.

How it tastes

Laid back and easy to drink - this ale has the smooth, sweet malt that doesn’t clamour for attention; a light, pleasant floral note that feels like a cooled cup of jasmine tea; strong grain backbone to keep it all afloat with such delicate flavours. And it all ends with a smooth mouthfeel and slightly sweet after taste. A well-done piece of work.

Recommended food pairing

Anything from your barbecue that you cook as the sun sets and isn’t complicated. And a cob of corn on the side.
