Introduction

Sean and Chantal, husband and wife, decided over ten years ago that it was time to get their vision of the craft beer up on its legs and out to the thirsty crowds. Starting in a small warehouse in Victoria, Sean brought his 20 years of brewing for local pubs to bear and struck out on a family venture hand-bottling beer. Together they’ve taken that tiny brewing company to a large-scale brewing concern, putting out seven year-round beers and 10 seasonal. Originally a name around the pubs and restaurants of British Columbia, Höyne Brewing is becoming a name known across the country, that signals a tasty craft beer. The Bier Garten is an old-school, German classic and Höyne has done it right. Importing German pilsner malt and built on their unique yeast hybrid, this is a crisp, clear, quaffable beer. Serves well at 8°C and can cellar for 12 months.

How it looks

Pours a pale straw colour, with a slightly murky body and light carbonation. A small, bubbly head of white foam remains on the top of the pint.

How it smells

A dry, crisp aroma of sun-dried grain malt, a dark stone-fruit impression, and a bit of citrusy zest that is quite faint.

How it tastes

This beer has a pillowy feel in the mouth, making the tasting experience almost fragrance more than taste. A light, slightly sweet grain malt flavour, and the slightest edge of sharp white wine dryness. As the fluffy beverage leaves the tongue, there remains a slightly astringent mouthfeel and the taste of grain. This is a delicate tasting beer and requires it to be cold, and your attention on it. But that also makes it highly drinkable.

Recommended food pairing

This is a subtle beer, so a more subdued meal would work well. Bangers & Mash, or a nice Ribeye with a baked potato.
