Introduction

Since the 1950s, the US capitol had lacked a proper brewing presence after the empire of brewer Christian Heurich packed up and shuttered their business. It took two men, lunatics some might say - Brandon Skall & Jeff Hancock - to have the gumption to open up Washington’s brewing legacy once more. Over 50 years since the brewing legend had left, they began making beer, and in 2011 the DC Brau Brewing Co. had kegs rolling to local watering holes. DC Brau uses a combination of American and European styles in their brewing techniques, delivering seven flagship beers and dozens of limited release beers. The dedicated DCB team has shipped beers to Maryland, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and now into the frozen Canadian lands. The Imperial is a double IPA with a big juicy tropical fruit aroma, hot levels of alcohol at 8%, and hoppy notes that avoid over-bitterness. Serves at 8°C and should be enjoyed immediately.

How it looks

Pours a rich honey colour with a fairly clear body and light carbonation. A thin layer of white, bubbly foam on top with little to no lacing.

How it smells

A lovely combination of warm malt sweetness that isn’t too cloying, and a muddled fruit aroma - melon and citrus - that is tender. The hops add a slight edge of leafy bitterness but are easy on the nose.

How it tastes

More bitter than you’d expect from the aroma, but only slightly so. It leans toward an IPA-like combination of leafy bitter hops and laidback toasted grain malt. The fruit from the aroma is barely registering on the palate, leaning more toward a dance between the hops and malt. The flavour lingers for quite a while and leaves behind a leafy aftertaste.

Recommended food pairing

A touch more bitter than you might expect - something with some heat and fat would match up well. Marinate some tenderloin in Sriracha and soy sauce, then BBQ.
