If you head into the town of Kelowna, you would do well to stop off at the folks who call themselves Shore Line Brewing and sample their taps. SLB creates their beers for the locals but welcomes all travellers who need a pint to wash the road dust from their throats. With a slate of a dozen beers, ranging across many different styles, there’s something for every lover of the brew to enjoy. Shore Line also sports a tap-room with artisanal pizza to go along with your pint. Set along the banks of the Okanagan River and ready to offer up a stool or help you get six of your favourites to take home, SLB is worth visiting, but also worth hunting down their delicious beer as it finally heads out of the small town and works its way across the great North. The Lochy Lager is an amber style beer with a malt-forward body that is rich and tasty, but with a balancing touch of hops to keep it tasting clean and cut through the noise. Serves well at 8°C and can stay in the cooler for half a year.
Pours a clear, toasted straw colour with light carbonation. A thin ring of white foam will cling to the outside of the glass, but doesn’t stick around much.
Almost totally dominated by the aroma of the warm, slightly sweet toasted grain malt, but there is a hint of citrus rolling around in the background.
Mostly you’ll be enjoying the warm, slightly sweet malt, that takes on more of a toasted corn taste than grain, but there’s also a little bit of that citrus hiding in the flavour. You’ll catch it as it warms on the tongue, but it also checks out pretty quick. This is a nice, mild tasting amber that won’t offend, but you might also find it a little one-dimensional if you’re the adventurous type.
This is an easy going lager - you can pair it with pretty much anything. Get some Vietnamese subs, because they are delicious.
