Introduction

It might be a strong cliche to start your fledgling business in a garage, but at least this time it was a commercial garage. Gladstone Brewing took over its space from the Seale and Thomson mechanics garage and dealership, and served as the inspiration for their taproom. The taps serve delicious, hand-crafted beer from modified tools, and their decor captures the laid-back attitude of the hardworking mechanic who cracks open a cold one at the end of a good day. Six core beers pour from those taps, and they’re not interested in giving them fancy names. The Gladstone delivers an IPA, Belgian Single, Porter, Pilsner, Hazy Pale Ale, and Cream Ale. Occasionally they’ll create a tasty seasonal to spice things up. The Red Ale is precisely that seasonal - A dark Red Ale that balances the flavours of grapefruit, sweet caramel, and pine. Serves well at 10°C and can stand six months in the fridge, but why wait?

How it looks

Pours a dark red-brown with murky body and medium carbonation. A couple fingers of frothy, mocha-tinted head stay bubbly on top of the beer, slowly receding.

How it smells

Despite the rich flavours boasted, the aroma on this beer is cagey. Most of what you’ll smell is sweet malt and a touch of bitterness suggestive of herbal hops. Some sweetness comes through as it warms up.

How it tastes

Two main flavours go to war on the palate: the malty, sweet kick of the classic amber ale, and a sharp, zesty flavour of grapefruit. The malt helps sweeten the more bitter and astringent elements of the grapefruit, resulting in a smooth quaff that doesn’t lean too far in either direction. The beer finishes smooth but leaves behind a slightly bitter note from the grapefruit.

Recommended food pairing

Heavier in body and with a slightly bitter kick, we recommend something light and with some heat to it. Hunt down a recipe for spicy Tuna bites and enjoy the combo.
