Introduction

It started in the mid-1990s with one simple idea: to give people a great spot to hunker down for a great beer and some tasty eats. Brothers Ron and Rick Chapman made the idea real by creating Coronado Brewing, opening the doors of a brewpub in the heart of their beach-town. Within a few years, their reputation for high-quality craft beer was spreading, and before the decade was out, they were heading for a full-time bottling line. A gold medal at the World Beer Cup in 2014 sealed the deal on national coverage for their beers, and now they’re breaking down borders to serve the world. With 10 year-round beers on the slate, combined with seasonal and collaborations, Coronado is making household name status. The Haze On the Horizon is a flavourful take on Westcoast IPA, using Nelson, Citra, Sabro, and Motueka hops for dynamic taste. Serves well at 8°C and should be enjoyed promptly.

How it looks

Pours true to its name with a hazy body, the colour of light caramel and with low carbonation. A bubbly bone-white head laces on the glass but calms down after a few.

How it smells

Quite subtle for an IPA - the fruit notes are muddled together and vague, the hops are slightly floral but difficult to pull out. The whole aroma is sweet and milky, making it tricky to nail down.

How it tastes

Combines the pleasure and smoothness of a cream ale with the bite and dynamic hop flavour of an IPA. A creamy, lactic quality pairs up with the malt for some roundness to the more bitter hop note. The hops are herbal and green, slightly earthy like a fresh root cutting. The fruit qualities are way in the back of this IPA, but its smoothness will entice you to slurp it down with abandon. Relax and let its unique take fill your palate.

Recommended food pairing

A smooth and bitter combination would do well to have some spicy peppers and fats - get into a Jerk Chicken recipe or mix up some sweet chili and Sriracha to marinate a flank steak.
