Introduction

One of the longest running artisanal beer projects in the U.S. continues a winning tradition of beers produced with unique character and memorable sensation. Crooked Stave has been experimenting with craft concoctions since 2010 and has graced the Craft Club on several occasions before. Brewing out of Denver, Colorado, the project focuses on the many uses of the Brettanomyces yeast - once the enemy of brewers and now a stalwart ally - resulting in a line of beers with spicy, funky flavour and a snap across the tongue like you’ve hooked up to the 220 line.

This saintly ‘brett’ is a take on classic Belgian farmhouse saison with fresh citrus character and a medley of tropical fruit all under the reins of the funky yeast of its name. Unfiltered to honour its wild nature and with a touch of yeast to keep it snappy until you’ve cracked it open. Serves best at 8°C and can keep in the cellar for half a year easily.

How it looks

Pours a cloudy golden sunset colour with easy carbonation and just the hint of a foam ring around the top.

How it smells

Opens up strong on the nose with a citrus kick - orange and lemon. The follow-up is peppery spice, honey notes, a bit of floral hop and in the background a touch of Brett funkiness.

How it tastes

A nice balance of the slightly bitter citrus zest and flesh against a sweet fruit and funky body. A wood and earth flavour strikes through the middle, like fresh cut cedar. The hops play mostly in the background and keep a steady flavour of floral notes and the snap of the Brettanomyces yeast wakes up the tongue. The taste finishes quickly with a dry cut-off leaving just a hint of pepper on the palate.

Recommended food pairing

The brewer recommends Fleur de Maquis & Herbes de Provence Chèvre - but we recommend making a cheese board, rather than eating it right from the package like an animal.
