One of the longest running craft brewers in Alberta keeps grinding out new and improved brews for distribution across the nation. Alley Kat Brewing began in 1994 in Edmonton and hasn’t stopped searching out unique takes on classic beers and even discovering a few new tricks. Their taproom is pulling pints, laying down flights and filling up growlers six days a week. Their brewers are making tasty, award winning beers 24/7. If you find yourself heading north on the Queen’s highway, stop in for a frosty one. Alley Kat delivers their Effing Saison — a refreshing and laid back take on a classic style. Saisons traditionally have an acidic bite and a melange of flavours that make you long for a blacksmith’s apron. The Effing has all the flavours, but eases off the acidity and drives into the flavour. Serves well at 10°C and can cellar for six months.
Pours pale and golden with minimal carbonation and a thin line of bone-white head that clings desperately to the glass.
Warm notes of over-ripe green apples and berries with white pepper riding shotgun. A touch of floral hop skids around the edges looking for some attention.
This saison comes on mild and with little of the usual crispy acidity common to the style. The peppery spice is the biggest flavour followed by the subtle taste of dried pears. The Tettnanger hops get a chance to show their character as the taste evolves, delivering a mild floral flavour that starts out with a bit of leafy green but relaxes into a buttery finish. This whole experience slides across the palate slow and easy.
We recommend putting some chicken and waffles in your mouth while enjoying this Saison — especially with blueberry syrup.
