Introduction

Latitude 42 is dedicated to providing one of the tastiest and full-service restaurant and microbrew experiences in Michigan. Opened in 2013, L42 sports dozens of beers on tap at their bar and grill smack-dab in the middle of the state. With two locations, the brewery is working overtime to deliver locally and now across North America. Over fifty separate brews have been made in the last six years and now they deliver Cosmic Charlie’s Pale Ale. This American style pale ale isn’t kidding around, with flavour that opens up from the first sip like a powder keg in a dynamite pond. American Pale Ales tend toward a piney, resinous hop character and Charlie’s is no exception. L42 has picked wisely with their hops in this beer, letting robust and flavourful green impart a dynamic flavour to this beer which makes tasting a real journey. Serves well at 8°C and should be enjoyed quickly.

How it looks

Pours a clear aged-honey amber colour with light carbonation and a modest head of off-white foam that lingers to protect the flavour.

How it smells

The zing of hops stands on the top of this beer’s taste. Like fresh pine and loamy earth that combines with the bitter zest of grapefruit touched by the fruit flesh. A bit of biscuit malt hides in the background.

How it tastes

Similar to the nose of this beer — generically sweet and hoppy at the start of the taste, but opening up into the hop character which reveals resinous pine and floral tones. The middle of the taste gets into a chewy dough malt flavour, smoothing out the sharper opening taste and taking over. A touch of bitter hop aftertaste leaning toward the pine, but it chops off quickly and you’re ready for another taste.

Recommended food pairing

It’s time for a classic — get into a BLT with thinly sliced tomato, crispy organic bacon (low on the smoke) and romaine on buttered sourdough.
