When taking up the noble art of brewing the most important part is to find the target and hit it. Goat Locker Brewing handles only a few beers, but has taken the time to make them worthy of national highlight. Joining the ranks of Calgary’s ever expanding craft landscape, a handful of brewers have quickly established their quality. Joining up with Canada Craft Club, Goat Locker has conceived of a third beer in their line-up, aiming for the seemingly simple but with hidden depth. This collaboration reveals the Light Pilsner – a light, dry and crispy beer with an easy touch and endless combination for pairings. This Light Pilsner is made in the German style – light bodied with medium hoppiness and a fruity base. But it’s more subtle than its originators, offering warm honey flavour and citrus tones hidden beneath its simple exterior. Serves well at a crisp 6°C and can enjoy six months of aging.
Pours a pale bodied honey yellow with a thin head of white foam and light carbonation. The head recedes quickly with mild lacing on the glass.
This release has a light scent profile with a touch of hoppiness, citrus zest, and very light doughy malt. Unlike the American styles this isn’t malty or thick, with a profile more like German fruity pilsner.
This Light Pilsner enjoys a combination of honey flavour and subtle citrus undertones, making it a close cousin to the fruity aroma and and mid-level hop bitterness of the German Pilsner. But where the European style is bold and fragrant, this is far more subtle. The hop comes on first in a delayed action, delivering the flavour late in the taste. Underneath the hops you can get a sense of the honey easily but less so the citrus. This is an easy beer to quaff down, but take your time and enjoy.
A host of options are available for pairing up with the easy flavour of this brew – zesty beef tacos, hot and spicy pho, fresh sea bass or bbq chicken. If you can catch it, pair it up.
