Introduction

The expansion of the mind has ever been the pursuit of the bold and through the plants many have found a path – Red Arrow has concocted their own means. The Sweet Leaf IPA carries the words of Black Sabbath on the bottle to remind their customers that tasting new and different things can yield impressive new results. Brewing on the southern tip of Vancouver Island, Red Arrow creates small-batch craft beers that explore the possibilities of space, both inner and outer. Five permanent roster beers and a handful of limited brews, Red Arrow serves Cowichan Valley and abroad.

The Sweet Leaf has characteristics commonly found in American IPAs but with some subtle kick and intelligent use of sweeter flavours. Tropical zest gives the Leaf some edge to cut through the flesh of blood orange and grapefruit, with pine heavy hops and thick, doughy malt in the body – serves well at 8°C, drink promptly.

How it looks

Pours a warm and deep honey colour with initial carbonation that relaxes to an active but not too sparkly body. A thin head of off-white rises on pour and recedes to a cling on the glass.

How it smells

Red Arrow is smashing together stone fruit notes with powerful hops in this brew and it comes on strong from the first sniff. The body of the fruit mixes with the acrid scent of the skin for a sweet note and then gets corralled by the funky hops.

How it tastes

The Sweet Leaf makes a marriage of its tropical fruit and leafy green hop characteristics. The fruit comes in with a strong sense of orange and grapefruit flesh with the zest of same providing some bitter cut through the sweet. The hops are leafy and strong in pine flavour with some floral notes in the background, most notable in the aroma that fills the senses after the swallow. Some caramel and dough flavour reminds us of the malt and the body has a dry, palette cleansing finish.

Recommended food pairing

Aim for something with some savoury character to it. Get your hands on a New York strip and render down the fat properly, follow up with a basting of butter and add some sautéed mushrooms. Simple salad with olive oil and lemon juice dressing to match.
