Introduction

Join us in welcoming back Old Abbey Ales! Reopened in August 2018, they're up and brewing again, and still focusing on classic Belgian styles. Old Abbey Ales is represented by a Belgian lion, holding a chalice and wheat sheaf, representing their world class beers and quality ingredients! This month they bring us one of their Innovation beers, where they have taken a long-standing style and transformed it. While our palates are used to drinking very bitter American Pale Ales, Belgian originals like this one use aged hops for a delicate, bitter finish, with smooth, toasty overtones. For a twist, Brettanomyces Bruxellenis has been added as a secondary yeast to the brew, adding a tartness with some barnyard flavours to the light citrus and hoppy finish. Be ready when you open this bottle - that second yeast has had a lot of time to create extra carbonation in the bottle and is ready to show off its extremely foamy side. Cool to 8 C and enjoy!

How it looks

Pours out a golden amber colour, with a four finger tower of white, puffy, long lasting, cloud-like head.

How it smells

A funky farmhouse-like aroma comes from the beer, with orange and papaya giving off a light sweetness. Supported by a grainy cracker characteristic, with a light citrus rind and earthy spice. At the very end, we find the aged hop bitters, traditional of the style.

How it tastes

The taste is less funky than the smell, initially presenting a cracker and bready taste. There's a light sweetness, some orange citrus pith, and mild hop bitterness. The Brettanomyces is present through the entire sip but leaves a lightness near the finish that is filled with a delicate, bitter hop tone that lingers. The carbonation is quite active, showing in an extremely frothy head and a very fizzy crackle on the tongue. There will be leftover yeast sediment in this bottle, your choice is to drink it as the brew intended, or skip the last sip if you're not so inclined.

Recommended food pairing

Live in cheese heaven with a Gouda or Havarti to really accentuate the malty sweetness of the beer. The delicious cheeses will also add a fuller mouthfeel to each light and ever-effervescent sip!
