Introduction

Twa Dogs Brewing hails from Vancouver Island by way of an enterprising Scotsman, owner Graeme Macaloney. Paying homage to their favourite Scottish Poet, the brewery and beers are named after the imagery found within the many odes, sonnets, and addresses penned by the great Robert Burns. Keeping tried and true to tradition, Twa Dogs does not filter their beers so you might get some sediment and haze. With a Master Brewer originally from New Zealand and Head Brewer from Scotland, the duo collaborates to create beers with Scottish roots while embracing the west coast life! This Stout is offering up a myriad of mystic flavours, giving us a complex contradiction in the colour and mouthfeel for the style. Using much lighter malts instead of traditional darker ones, plays into the flavour of the coffee, instead of focusing on the roasted notes like normal dictates. Raise a glass at 8 C.

How it looks

No trace of darkness in this light, golden, body, complimented by a cloud of fluffy, long lasting heads that laces perfectly.

How it smells

Close your eyes and smell; the aromatic mysticism from this knot of light and dark beer meshed together is pure magic! Hints of chocolate, coffee, and a bread backbone that we'd normally smell in a darker stout, are sidled up against real grain, and a biscuit undertone!

How it tastes

The trickery of the nose extends into the palate - we find this white Stout to have the same characteristics of a traditional brew, but with a lighter body and softer mouthfeel. A smooth creaminess from the added oats and lactose is paired with a lovely sweetness from subtle hints of vanilla and caramel. With no hop bitterness to be found, along with no acrid burnt aftertaste from the roasted barley, this smooth, complex beer is a real winter treat! The light ABV keeps it super sessionable!

Recommended food pairing

A fresh shortbread will play up the lighter malts, adding some extra sweetness to the biscuity base of the beer. If it's been dipped in chocolate, or has chunks of toffee in it, all the better!
