This collab, from two of our favourite nomadic breweries, Evil Twin Brewing and _____ (Blank) Brewing teamed up to create 'The Check Please' out of Dorchester Brewing in Boston. The name is a play on Blank's 'Can I have _____?' series. Who doesn't love a good oxymoron?! The Black India Pale Ale you're about to enjoy is a reimagining of the classically hoppy American Pale Ale, with a dark twist. Wait what? First editions were tap room specials in the late 1990's, however this style has become one of the biggest brewing debates to date. Check out Stone's Greg Koch's article on CraftBeer.com for his views! And to add confusion...this hop-heavy dark beer has a few aliases! Look for bottles marked as New World Porter, India Black Ale, Cascadian Dark Ale. Since this Double Dry Hopped Black IPA was only released in cans, we've included two for your enjoyment! Sharing is fun! Enjoy today at 7 C.
The haziness is opaque, and black at the core with dark brown edges. There's lots of dense foam that laces beautifully!
Aromas of big citrus, tropical fruits like passion fruit, papaya, and mangoes, with a good balance from the malt and spice end. We find charred wood, peppercorn, chocolate, and mild cocoa, all leading to the big finish of toasted dark bread, coffee, and pine!
We find the same citrus as the nose with lots of grapefruit, tangerine, and lemon. The fruit becomes more complex, giving off more melon, and berry highlights. The dark malts give off lots of toasted and roasted characteristics. The peppercorn, herbal notes, and pine are coming from the double dry hopped process. It's smooth and easy to drink; with an aggressively bitter and resinous finish. It's earthy, with a balanced hop complexity; nice malt backbone, and little to no sweetness.
We love the idea of barbecued short ribs, and braised in a Texas style barbecue sauce. Add in a carrot cake for dessert, and taste the carrots and fatty ribs play with the beer!
