Introduction
Although Southern Australia's Clare Valley is better known for its winemaking and as the home of Australian Riesling, Clare Valley Brewing Co. is making its mark in the region, on land that it shares with its sibling label Jeanneret Wines. This arrangement allows the two to share resources, including drawing their water from an aquifer beneath the brewery, giving the beers "the essence of Clare Valley as their backbone". With humble beginnings in 2014, owners Adrian Henshall and Ben Jeanneret have transformed their original historic look into one with a contemporary, but still retro feel. Most of CVBC beers have been awarded commendations from various sources and their Red IPA is no exception: Australian International Beer Awards Silver 2018 and #7 in the Aussie Tinnies 2018. As they like to say, they're "all about good times spent with good friends drinking great beer." Enjoy at 9 C.
How it looks
An amber, rich, tanned leather body, with a slight haze. The head is a pale beige and frothy and leaves lasting lacing.
How it smells
Fruity and floral, this beer has a wonderful nose that makes us swoon! It starts out with strawberries, raspberries and sweet blossoms, and transitions to a light honey, caramel, toffee with a hint of spice from the hops that makes this smell delightful!
How it tastes
This is a medium body, so take a moderate sip and get ready to go on an adventure! We find the carbonation level moderate; allow the bubbles to play across your tongue and add a nice creaminess to the mouthfeel. Entirely balanced, the smell is true to what we're finding on the palate. We find flavours of delicate cherries, slight sweetness, malty biscuits, and thin toffee wafers. Moderately hopped, this beer ends with less bitterness than a typical IPA and continues to last in the mouth.
Recommended food pairing
Play into the fruity core of this beer by pairing it with a Saskatoon berry sausage. The berries mix into the fruit medley and the bitter hops will keep your palate fresh for another bite!
