Gypsy Brewing, the art of making beer without a brewery, is a great way for breweries still in their infancy to access great production facilities without the costs of building their own. They create the recipes and collaborate with the brewery to make the beer, then package and sell it as their own. Some have decided this is the only way to go, as is the case with the two lads from Omnipollo. Based in Stockholm since 2011, Henok Fentie and Karl Grandin dream up tasty recipe's then make them a reality elsewhere. With the Leon, they have created a Belgian Pale Ale, their motivation was having a good companion as they go out with friends who drink bland Lagers. Brewed at De Proefbrouwerij just outside of Ghent, Belgium, this brew comes complete with Champaign yeast and a hop bill that makes it very refreshing! You have some time with this brew, enjoy within a couple months and serve at 7 C.
Warning - high carbonation, be careful when you open. A two finger head of off-white dense foam, a lovely body of copper, gold and amber.
The aroma on a really good Belgian Pale Ale is so incredibly inviting - like it is here! Leon is delightfully malty in the nose with notes of pear, lemon and orange peel, following with a beautiful pepper-like background which adds extra complexity.
Leon is a little different from most Belgian Pale Ales in only one real way, the alcohol content is higher than the usual 4.8-5.5%. This approach has brought a little more sweetness to the first taste, but the Champagne yeast used dries out the finish on each sip making it incredibly refreshing. Although they have certainly added ample hops, it's more of a beautiful collaboration with the yeast. Each sip scrubs the roof of the mouth and we're left feeling completely exhilarated.
Choucroute garnie, a French sauerkraut with a pork sausage, is a match made in heaven and has the nod from Brooklyn Brewery's Garret Oliver. Or mussels & frites on a hot patio day and a friend named Leon.
