Profile

July comes with a gigantic bang. Bigger than even the biggest of big things that we’ve done before. This month we’re doing a parallel tasting of two barley wines, done in two different ways from the highly renowned brewers at the Gigantic Brewing Company in Portland. If you have a friend or two to share these with, great, gather around and enjoy the experience, these are certainly big enough to share. But if you’re doing this solo, prepare yourself, you essentially have two bottles of wine in front of you, so consider either tasting separately or cellar one of them to enjoy down the road.

We have nearly the same liquid in each bottle, the highly age-able, high alcohol barley wine that has been long boiled to caramelize the wort and bring out a ton of character. The other one has been aged for two years in bourbon barrels presenting a whole other level of fuel for your sensory tools served at 13-16°

Look

Pours a deep beautiful dark red ruby colour. Slow sailing lacing on the glass with minimal carbonation. Compared to the bourbon barrel aged, there is more transparency and brilliance in the body. Although it's a very thin line on the head, there is more than found on the barrel aged.

Smell

The aroma is incredible. This has a very sweet note on the nose like caramel sauce poured over a dense and beautiful fresh pretzel out of the oven. Obviously none of the boozy aroma we get with the barrel aged which we'll get into on the other card.

Taste

The smell is a little misleading because the taste is big toffee, raisins, apricots and plums that starts very sweet but ends delightfully bitter. The alcohol is there, but quite subdued.

Pairing

There is no doubt this is of British influence. Tasting this brew calls for a Sunday roast, Yorkshire pudding with gravy, carrots and a caramel pudding followed by a relaxing viewing of the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.
