Introduction

Specializing in barrel-aged and experimental ales, this brewery takes it’s unique moniker from founder Patrick Rue’s family surname. Known for their over-the-top sours, The Bruery makes extra-strong, extra-sour, and often extra-rare Belgian-inspired beers.Originating in style from the Flanders region of Belgium, this dark, sour ale has roots deep in brewing history and predates most of the ales that have become popular in contemporary culture. Overall this is a very nice, fairly sour rendition of a Flemish Red.

How it looks

This Flanders style red ale has been aged in wine barrels for 18 months and pours a gorgeous mahogany red colour with a small, off-white head that quickly dissipates into a ring and leaves no lacing.

How it smells

On the nose, this beer is full of dark sweet fruits, dark cherries, raspberries, grapes, red wine vinegar, a touch of oak and leather and some tart and funk aromas.

How it tastes

Flavour-wise, Oude Tart has initial big flavours of dark cherries and a touch of vanilla on the front with a slight sweetness and then quickly settles into sourness exposing tart dark fruit, figs and smoky oak. This medium-bodied beer finishes with the cherry flavours returning and the sourness lingering in the mouth. The carbonation in this beer is superb and, as with many sours, has fast moving small bubbles that offer a nice effervescence to the beer.

Recommended food pairing

This Flanders Style Red Ale would go wonderfully with beef tartare. The tartness would cut the richness of the beef while the beef would amplify the flavours of dark fruit, oak and leather. For a cheese board, include bleu, Camembert, Fontina and old cheddar. Finally, if you are looking to this beer for dessert, pair it with black cherry ice cream.
