Introduction

The Lost Coast Brewery and Café was conceived in 1986 by Barbara Groom, a pharmacist, who wondered what it would take to start her own brewpub. An avid home brewer who spent years honing her skills and studying pubs throughout England and Wales, Barbara purchased the 100-year old Pythian Castle in Eureka California and began building her dream. The building, a restored wood frame structure built in 1982, was purchased from its original owners, the Fraternal Order of the Knights of Pythias. After extensive remodelling, the brewery official opened in July of 1990. After much success and outgrowing the original facility, plus the one the brewery moved into in 1993, Lost Coast beer is now crafted at a new state-of-the art facility in the southern part of Eureka, California that opened in 2015. Currently brewing at a 90,000-barrel capacity, Lost Coast is now the 43rd largest craft brewery in the United States.

How it looks

This oatmeal stout pours pitch black with a dark beige head that left modest lacing as it dissipated.

How it smells

On the nose, 8-ball smells of roasted malt, coffee and dark chocolate with a hint of hoppy earthiness.

How it tastes

We tasted lots of roasted malt up front moving into coffee, chocolate and some dark fruit in mid-palate that contributes some sweetness to this brew. This medium-bodied beer finishes with some cocoa flavours, a mild sweetness and more coffee at the end. This smooth textured stout is reasonably sessionable and is a good bridge between lower ABV stouts and larger imperial stouts.

Recommended food pairing

Oatmeal stout is an easy beer style to pair and should work well with most foods. If you are leaning towards something sweet, go for a dessert that contains chocolate and/or caramel. On a savoury side, this stout is large enough to stand up to bold meat dishes and would be wonderful with a medium-rare porterhouse braised with some of this beer (if you're willing to give up drinking some to use for cooking).
