Introduction

Lagunitas has a well-documented history of associating themselves with marijuana. In the early days, they threw a party every Thursday at 4:20 inviting employees, regulars and anyone kicking around the brewery would join in the fun. In 2005, at a notorious St. Patrick’s Day party, their love for this herb almost shut the brewery down. While they’ve cleaned things up since then, they maintan a quiet homage to their hippie past: still today, all of the brewery’s internal numbers for annual barrel production finish with the mythical marijuana code 420 (32,420 barrels in 2005; 37,420 barrels in 2006…etc.), their branding around their Waldo beer and they have even named a beer after that fateful St. Patrick’s Day.

How it looks

Hop Stoopid pours a dark gold with tinge of amber and a creamy, frothy head that lingers well and leaves nice lacing.

How it smells

It hits you with strong aromas of orange, grapefruit, tropical fruit, along with a slight floral kick and a touch of pine.

How it tastes

A medium body beer with a smooth texture, this beer is well-balanced and less of a hop-assault on the palate than you would expect given its IBU of 102. Resinous hop flavours intermingle with grapefruit on the front with some sweetness coming through the middle with flavours of pineapple, orange and some floral hits. This beer finishes dry with lingering notes of pine and grapefruit.

Recommended food pairing

This beer is great with charcuterie and sausages. It stands up well to the more intense flavoured meats and the hops boost the meaty umami and salt while clearing away any lingering fat from the meat.
