Introduction

This numbered special release beer is one of only a few thousand released from Epic Brewing’s Exponential Series. This particular Big Bad Baptist comes from batch #50, which was brewed on February 12, 2015 and packaged on September 1, 2015. This big, bad, barrel-aged beer does not concern itself with freshness and actually develops and builds further complexity over time in the bottle. Each season’s release uses a different dark roasted coffee with this batch having been brewed with Blue Copper Coffee and cocoa nibs. Due to the barrel-aging process, each release also has varying ABVs by batch. This one comes in hot (but remarkably mellow and smooth) at 12.6%. This special beer is one to drink now or to cellar for months (or years) to come and share with the best of friends over the best stories. Year after year, we are consistently impressed with Big Bad Baptist and this release is no different. This is truly remarkable beer that we are thrilled to be able to offer you!

How it looks

Pitch black with a thin, quickly dissipating tan head.

How it smells

A massive, amazing nose of bourbon, chocolate, roasted coffee, caramel and vanilla.

How it tastes

The beer presents itself in a glass with a thick body that is velvety and smooth with some good ‘chew’ to it. The flavour is a complex mixture of roasted malts, nutty coffee, caramel chews, vanilla and fudgy chocolate with some mild bitter dark chocolate. The barrel character is subtle at first then builds and develops on the palate with hints of oak and leather. The finish is mild and lingering and defies the ABV on this barrel-aged beauty and makes it rather dangerous.

This complex and rich beer pairs best with hard cheeses and dark chocolate desserts.
