Introduction

We are huge fans of Double Mountain (but really, who isn't?). The Fa la la la la Winter Ale is definitely a go-to seasonal we can't live without. And the Divine 9 was the first in the Anniversary series that we have featured. Keeping the series alive, we are proud to give you the Tenacious Ten. For those less familiar with Double Mountain, we love telling the story of Brew Master, Matt Swihart. He is a diverse guy, who basically can excel at anything he puts his mind to. We are happy he settled on brewing, because he is damn good at it. He has worked for the military as an aerospace engineer, drove horse carriages in San Francisco, repaired vacuum cleaners in Madison, joined the Peace Corps, delivered mail, and finally, (finally!) discovered his true passion while working at a homebrew supply shop. We couldn't forget, Matt also plays banjo in a band called the Greenneck Daredevils! Serve 12C.

How it looks

Pours dark brown, almost closer to black staring into the core of the glass. Thick, tan head that is heavy and frothy, and dissipates slowly.

How it smells

Double Mountain notes, "A heavy blanket of caramel, coffee, blackberry, and tannic vanilla are on the nose." The bourbon barrel offers plenty of richness, smoke and roasty-toasty notes. We really like that there is more than just an essence of bourbon, you can actually smell it.

How it tastes

You have been warned, this beer packs a punch, "In honour of ten tenacious years, we aged this behemoth of a stout in bourbon barrels for a year, harvesting a decadent libation of imperial magnitude. Followed by a formidably serene and viscous mouthfeel, with just the right amount of bourbon warmth at the finish." Again, the bourbon flavours are alluring, sandwiched between vanilla and toffee, and smoke and leather. Touches of dark chocolate, molasses and whiskey mingle through the finish.

Recommended food pairing

Strong and stinky cheese is a classic suggestion, and would be a hit with this brew. There is a hidden acidity and balance of bitter and sweet is dynamite and has us craving a braised beef short ribs.
