Introduction

Brauerei Reichenbrand is a small, classic, family brewery. Owned and operated by the Bergt family since 1874, fifth-generation master brewer Michael Bergt has not strayed from the brewery’s old-style processes. When it comes to a brewery you can trust to craft great tasting traditional beers, Brauerei Reichenbrand is at the top of the list. Original Ritterguts Gose is a one of a kind beer that dates back to 1824. It has received many awards from around the world including being named “World’s Best Gose” at the World Beer Awards and making several lists of essential beers you must try before you die. A gose (pronounced GO-s-ah) is a variation of a sour ale with a faint salty aftertaste. If you’re a fan of sours, the Ritterguts Gose will be a welcome addition to your repertoire. If you are on the fence with sours, this beer will be a an enjoyable nudge to the sour side. Serve between 4-8 C.

How it looks

Deceivingly cloudy, hazy blonde that produces a small, bubbly foam head that quickly fizzles away into a thin, white halo. Once in its glass, the carbonation mellows out completely, leaving a light, tangerine orange body very mild in feel and viscosity.

How it smells

A defining character of Gose is the salt. Briny sea salt is immediately detected, as well as coriander and dry straw. Sour lemon, melon and rainwater follow the initial salty fragrance.

How it tastes

A wheat ale, using malted wheat for 50% of the grain bill, and coriander adding herbal spice. The salty taste is acquired with the use of local water and lactobacillus bacteria added after the boil. A crisp and easy to drink beer that is very refreshing. The salt and coriander lead the way, and it is easy to let it overtake your palate, but other more subtle tastes are there. Fresh lime, lemon, watermelon, granny smith apples, and crispy wheat add to this beer’s simplicity.

Recommended food pairing

A Gose is a beer best served cold and on a hot day, preferably while lounging outside. Summer salads that use oil based dressings and light desserts like frozen yogurt and gelato pair well too.
