f you’re looking for an easy to drink, well balanced IPA that can be enjoyed during anytime of the year, Hopworks Urban Brewery’s Chinook IPX is a great beer to consider. Part of a line of IPAs that utilize the SMASH brewing technique (Single Malt and Single Hop), this beer is a hop forward ale that showcases its use of Chinook hops. Created by Hopworks, the “Chinookie Wookie” is Cascade-like, dual-purpose strain of hops used for both bittering and finishing. Grown at Roy Farms in Moxee, Washington, the hop is also certified Salmon-Safe, meaning all water usage is environmentally sound for native Salmon to spawn and thrive. The dry hopping process is applied during secondary fermentation, allowing oils from the hops to seep into the beer. The result is a beer with a pleasing floral aroma and a sweet, crisp, refreshing taste that will turn any non-IPA drinker into a believer.
Pours a slightly hazy, light amber colour with lively carbonation and very little head that clings to the glass as you drink.
It has a pleasing floral aroma that smells of fresh cut grass, pine and orange citrus. There is a great play between herbal and citrus notes, zesty and fresh.
At first, bitter orange peel, pineapple, caramel and pine can be tasted before finishing with lots of earthiness, herb and spice. The palate shows more complexity and variation in subtle flavours. Mouthfeel is smooth with little to no bitter aftertaste.
Pairs well with salty fried food as well as complex, flavourful Indian and Mexican dishes. It is also terrific with grilled meats and caramelized onions.
