New Belgium’s sours are made up of blends from two different types of sour beer, aging inside their foeders named Oscar and Felix. The sour in Felix started out as a lager that was aged and acidified in several French oak foeders for 1-2 years. This particular beer is a blend of 50% wood-aged sour from Felix with 50% golden cinnamon lychee lager.
Pours a hazy golden straw with a fluffy white head.
Smells of stone fruit with a combination of peach and apricot, lemon, orange, white grapes, strawberries, subtle floral and funk with some woody notes.
Begins with moderate sourness that is quickly followed by sweet fruit and some caramel flavours. The sweetness builds and then eases into some mild bitterness and a crisp sourness. A medium-bodied beer that starts tart and sour, and finishes dry. Nice balance of sweet and sour, both of which are mild and prevent any overwhelming tartness. Crisp, refreshing and a great summer beer.
Pair this lychee beer with an Asian dish. A spicy summer stir-fry with mild protein and veggies will play well with the sweetness of the beer, while the tartness will interact well with the dish’s spice.
